With a little website construction, I thought it would be fun to share some historic site construction I’ve seen over the years. This starts with the Parthenon, which I visited a frequently during my semester studying abroad in Greece in college. I was a history major just beginning to dabble in historic preservation, and I was fascinated that they were reconstructing whole portions of the Parthenon. Many of the original pieces are located just down the hill in the Acropolis Museum (my #1 must-see if you ever go to Athens!).
It was University of Oregon’s historic preservation field school that both introduced me to historic preservation and convinced me to pursue a Masters degree in the subject. Two of my field schools included Frank Lloyd Wright’s Gordon House and the Frenchglen Hotel, both in Oregon.
The first time I saw it, I honestly wasn’t sure I liked the Gordon House. But after spending a week in the space, I went away not just loving the house but fascinated by Frank Lloyd Wright’s work as a whole (I previously wrote about this here). Little did I know I would be working in Oak Park in a few years!
At the Frenchglen Hotel I learned a little bit of everything: cedar shingles, siding, and windows. Nothing makes you appreciate historic preservation more than a hands-on preservation project, whether it’s sanding and varnishing a cedar ceiling panel on a Frank Lloyd Wright house or nailing new cedar shingles to the porch roof of a historic hotel.
